Houghton Forest is a great place for insects and I regularly check the nettle beds by the paths. On April 29th I found 3 Snout larvae in different clumps of nettles. One was small (1 cm) the others large (2 cm). Each was at the top of a nettle, eating the new growth. I also found one male Green Longhorn and a white Crab Spider waiting for its next meal. These spiders have been observed catching endangered butterflies in conservation areas.
On April 14th I didn't find much in Houghton Forest, so things have emerged since that date.
On April 17th I assisted Sussex Search & Rescue with marshalling the Brighton Marathon. Marshalling sports events is one way we raise funds for our charity, which is on call 24/7 to respond to police call-outs to search for missing vulnerable people.
We are trained unpaid volunteers and number around 50 people from all over Sussex. We had a call-out yesterday but happily before we could begin the search the missing person was located safe and well. We have new member information evenings in Brighton on 16 and 17th May if anyone is interested in joining our team.
