Brimstone and a Great Spotted Woodpecker

Brimstone, Gonepteryx rhamni
On Thursday I enjoyed a walk on the heath by Pulborough Brooks. I had just started into the woodland by the car park when a Brimstone fluttered by. It obligingly landed nearby and I was able to creep up and get a shot before it continued its search for a female. Flocks of Goldfinches and Lesser Redpolls fed high up on beech nuts. Afterwards I headed to Nettleys hide hoping to see the Ruff that had been reported. A birder allowed me to look through his scope at the Ruff wading in a distant pool. On the way back to the visitor centre I stopped to look across a field and a Green Woodpecker flew past and landed in a distant tree. I sat by the bird feeders by the cafe and a Great Spotted Woodpecker came down.
