Stanley Spencer and Buff-tips

Buff-tip, Phalera bucephala
On Sunday morning I had a short walk in Rewell Wood and found a Large Skipper and a Red Piercer.
Tuesday morning  we took Jackie and Aunt Bea to the Pallant Gallery at Chichester to see the Stanley Spencer exhibition "Heaven in a Hell of War", which closes June 15. What a revelation! Completely different works to those displayed in his gallery at Cookham. These were First World War paintings normally housed in Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere, Hampshire. While the chapel is undergoing restoration, the collection is displayed in this unique exhibition. They are very powerful, but not battlefield portrayals. They were painted for the building, based on the artists personal experiences. I have rarely seen fabrics, materials and stonework painted so well.
Late afternoon yesterday I found several new species at Rewell Wood: a stunning red Hazel Leaf-roller Weevil, a Hemp-agrimony Conch, a tiny weevil (Cionus hortulanus), a Mirid bug (Grypocoris stysi), a pair of mating micromoths and the star prize – two Buff-tip moths.
