The Emperor's New Clothes

Emperor moths, Saturnia pavonia, male on right
On Tuesday I did my weekly butterfly transect at Mill Hill. Dingy Skippers were about and I saw my first two Small Heaths of the year. I then headed to Kithurst Meadow having been alerted by Neil that a female Emperor moth had appeared. When I arrived a male had been attracted by her pheromones. Neil returned for photos when I reported the arrival of the second specimen. We were both delighted to see a pair of these beautiful moths, a first for me.
