Adur World Oceans Day and a Large White

On Saturday I attended the Adur World Oceans Day exhibition in Shoreham to run a Butterfly Conservation stand with Mark Colvin and his daughter Charlotte. The good weather ensured great attendance with many people stopping at our exhibit, especially children. This was a very gratifying as we are keen to promote butterflies and moths to the next generation so they can continue the conservation work we are so passionate about.
Andy Horton had his marine tanks next to us and we benefited from the crowd of children enthusiastically enjoying his lobster and crab exhibit that Len did a brilliant job of demonstrating. Steve Savage’s marine conservation exhibit featuring Ed the Bear and  the inflatable dolphin was as popular as ever.
Sussex Wildlife Trust, the Friends of Shoreham Beach and the Southwick Camera Club all had excellent exhibits. We shared the marquee with food and drink stalls, and a great Cajun band, Rough Chowder,  played outside.  The event was judged by us to be a great success. Thanks to Andy and the team for all their hard work in making this event happen every year.

One of our visitors told us about three large hairy caterpillars that had crossed the path by the Ropetackle Centre. I set off with a container but the caterpillars had long gone. My bonus was a female Large White busy laying her eggs on a patch of cabbage.
