Dark Green Fritillaries mating

This morning the skies were blue and I headed off to Botany Bay following Mark Colvin's success with the Purple Emperor yesterday:
There I met about 10 other enthusiasts but over the next 5 hours no sightigns were made in spite of perfect conditions. However we were all very pleased with the mating pair of Dark Green Fritillaries which were found in the conservation meadow. Other butterflies seen were Small Skipper, Red Admirals, Meadow Browns, Ringlets and the larva of a Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth feeding on honeysuckle.

On Friday (today) I will join Team Purple Emperor which will scour West Sussex for the most butterflies to beat Team Silver-spotted Skippers who will search East Sussex. Our team will headed by natural history broadcaster and Butterfly Conservation Vice President Nick Baker.
See the link above for details and to follow the teams' progress through the day on Twitter.
